The Best Time to Landscape a Garden: Why We Design in Winter

The best time to landscape a garden is usually spring and early summer, but the best time to design one is now. When the leaves are down and the borders have died back, a garden shows its true shape: where the levels fall, where water sits after rain, and which views open up once the trees are bare. That’s the information a good design is built on.

We plan most of our spring and summer builds over the winter for exactly that reason. A design started in October or November is drawn, revised and agreed by the time the ground is ready to work, so the build can begin when the weather turns rather than waiting on a drawing that hasn’t been started.

Why Winter Shows a Garden as It Really Is

In summer, a garden hides a lot. Mature planting softens boundaries, screens neighbouring windows and disguises awkward corners. Strip that back and the structure underneath is much easier to read. We can see how much privacy the hedges really give in January, not just in July, and how far the shadow of the house reaches when the sun sits low.

Winter also tells us about drainage. A lawn that looks perfect in August might hold standing water for days after a wet week in November. Spotting that on the site survey means the drainage goes into the design from the start, rather than turning up halfway through a build.

Is Spring the Best Time to Landscape a Garden?

For the build itself, spring and early summer are often ideal. The ground is workable, the days are longer and new planting has a full growing season ahead of it. It’s also when most homeowners want their garden finished, ready to enjoy through the warmer months.

That’s why the planning needs to happen first. If the design process only starts in March, the build tends to slip into late summer and the garden isn’t ready until the season is nearly over. Starting the conversation in autumn means the drawings are signed off and the materials chosen before spring arrives.

Can Landscaping Be Done in Winter?

Some of it can. Groundwork, drainage and some hard landscaping can go ahead in the colder months when conditions allow, and bare-root trees and hedging are planted while they’re dormant. Heavy rain and frost do limit what’s sensible, though. Laying paving on saturated ground or pouring foundations in a hard frost isn’t something we’d do on a client’s garden.

So winter is rarely a quiet season for us. It’s when the design work is busiest, and when any preparatory work that suits the conditions gets done, ready for the main build.

What Happens During a Winter Design

Every project starts with a consultation with Tommy, usually at the house, walking the garden and talking through how the space should work. How will it be used on a weekday evening? Where does the family actually sit? What should be visible from the kitchen window in February?

From there we carry out a full site survey and move into the design itself, which typically takes two to four weeks. Tommy and Rea work through layout, levels, materials and planting, and we refine it with the client until it’s right. We’ve written more about why this stage matters in our post on why we always design before we build.

Choosing Materials and Planting Without the Rush

A design agreed in winter gives everyone time to make decisions properly. Paving samples can be laid out on the existing patio and looked at in different light. Stone, timber and porcelain can be compared side by side rather than chosen in a hurry because a build crew is waiting.

Planting benefits too. Rea’s planting plans are built around how a garden looks across all twelve months, and winter is the clearest reminder of why that matters. Evergreen structure, bark, seed heads and winter flowering shrubs all earn their place when you’re standing in the garden in December, looking at what’s missing.

Planning Lighting and Features Around Dark Evenings

Long, dark evenings make it obvious how much a garden can offer after sunset. Winter is a good time to decide where garden lighting should go, because cabling has to be planned before any paving or walls are built. The same goes for water features, outdoor kitchens and any structure that needs power or drainage running to it.

Getting these decisions into the design early means they’re built in properly, with nothing chased into finished surfaces later.

If you’re thinking about a new garden for next spring or summer, now is the right time to start. Book a consultation with Tommy and we’ll walk the garden with you, talk through what you’d like and explain how our garden design and build process works, from the first visit to the finished garden.

The best time to build a garden is spring. The best time to design one is now.
Winter shows us what a garden is really like: where water sits after rain, how far the shadows reach, which views open up once the trees are bare. It's the information every good design is built on.

Clean lines only work when there's real structure behind them. A contemporary garden that's just minimal looks bare within a year; one with the right proportions, sightlines and materials stays calm and considered for a decade.

A pergola done well changes how you use your garden entirely. It creates a room outside, extends the season, and gives the rest of the space something to organise around.

Cheers to an amazing summer! 🥂
What a summer it’s been… We hope you’ve all survived the heat! We have to say, it’s rather nice to finally see a little green returning to the lawns!
It’s been a busy few months here at Rose Hill Luxury Gardens. Rea has spent much of the summer making some wonderful memories with the children during their school holidays, but with September here, it’s very much back to business and there’s a lot happening behind the scenes.
Rea is currently designing our 2027 RHS Chelsea Flower Show trade garden for our longstanding clients @rhinogreenhouses, and we are incredibly excited about where this one is heading. We don’t want to give too much away just yet, but we think it’s going to be a trade garden to remember… watch this space.
And that’s not all for Chelsea…
Rea has also been quietly working away behind the scenes on another very exciting Chelsea Flower Show project. We can’t reveal too much just yet, but hopefully it won’t be long before we can share more.
Meanwhile, Tommy has been busy managing the teams across our current projects in Dunmow, Chigwell and Chelmsford, with plenty of construction happening and some beautiful gardens beginning to take shape.
We’ve also got a number of new design consultations booked in over the coming weeks, so it really is all go!
We say it every year, but autumn really is one of the best times to start redesigning your garden. Having the build take place through the cooler months, when you’re naturally using the garden less, is far more practical and means everything can be beautifully designed, built and planted ready to enjoy when spring arrives.
We still have availability to take on a couple more design & build projects this year, so if you’ve been thinking about transforming your outdoor space, now is the perfect time to get the process started.
We’d love to help you create your dream garden.

Well… this was a lovely surprise! 🏆🏆
We are incredibly proud to share that Rose Hill Luxury Gardens has been named Family Business of the Year AND Most Innovative Family Business at the 2026 Essex Business Awards!
When we started Rose Hill, it was simply the two of us with an idea, a lot of ambition and a vision for creating something a little different.
Fast forward to today and we have an amazing team around us, have created gardens for some wonderful clients, worked at some of the biggest RHS garden shows in the country and somehow managed to juggle building a business alongside raising our little family!
Like any family business, there have been plenty of long days, late nights, challenges, risks and moments where work and family life completely blur into one… which makes receiving these two awards feel even more special.
We’re incredibly proud of how far Rose Hill has come, but also very aware that we couldn’t have done it without our brilliant team, our clients who trust us with their gardens, and everyone who has supported us along the way.
Family Business of the Year 2026 🏆
Most Innovative Family Business 2026 🏆
A very proud moment for us both — and another little milestone in the Rose Hill story.
