The Brief
Our clients had recently moved into a new-build property in Silver End. The garden was a blank plot handed over by the developer with nothing but fencing. It was also on a slope and completely unusable.
Their initial thought was to split the garden across two levels. After our consultation, Tommy listened to how the family wanted to use the space and suggested a different approach: digging into the slope to create one flat, practical garden with raised borders around the sides and back to add interest and structure. The clients loved this idea and went all in.
They wanted a proper outdoor space with a patio large enough for dining, a good lawn for the children, a dedicated garden room, and privacy from the surrounding plots. They came to Rose Hill for a single team to design and build the entire project.
The Solution
Tommy and Rea designed the garden around the way the family would actually use it. A large porcelain patio directly off the house gives generous space for furniture and everyday use. The lawn is sized to feel open and usable. Stepping stones provide a practical route to the garden room without breaking the lawn visually.
Portuguese laurel screening along the rear boundary gives the garden a sense of enclosure and maturity that most new-build plots lack. The porcelain raised beds were designed using the same tiles as the patio, installed upright, creating a seamless finish. The clients chose their own plants for the borders, while Rose Hill selected the screening trees.
